Yes another hackintosh – this time its an EiSystems 3089 Uk and everything from DVDs to Front Row to the transparent Finderbar works great!

A True OS X Alternative

Today i am very pleased. I have found a true Mac OS X alternative. But isn’t Linux Mint a true alternative?? No. Linux Mint is nothing compared to what i have found.

Yes, the above desktop is not running OS X. It is running gOS, which proves to me that Linux could become very popular VERY soon. It’s difficult to describe this distro but here are some key features:

OS X Like Dock
Gnome Desktop
Linux Kernel
Google Gadgets
Native support for formats such as .MOV

There is so much more so i urge you to try this one out for yourself ASAP!!

An Alternative to Mac OS X?

As i have discontinued using OS X on my hackintosh i have been deciding on a true Mac OS X alternative and rival to become my primary OS.

My one requirement was that the new OS would not be Windows based. That left me with Linux, BSD and Solaris. I chose Linux because of its kernel stability, performance and secureness.

The next question was what flavour of Linux should i use? As i wanted a true OS X alternative i wanted something with brilliant visual effects but at the same time wanted a stable and reliable OS.

I would have chosen ubuntu were it not for Linux Mint. This is an extract from Wikipedia:

Linux Mint is an operating system for personal computers. While Mint is mostly based on (and compatible with) Ubuntu, the design of the user interface differs. Design differences include:

A distinct user interface, including a simplified bootloader, desktop layout, theme, and the custom Mint menu.

A strong focus on full functionality out of the box (E.g.: Wireless drivers included, plugins required to play common media formats installed by default, screen resolution automatically set, etc.).[1] Linux Mint 6 also includes or features a free Flash player so users can view sites such as YouTube without having to install anything else.

The Mint Tools, a collection of system tools designed to make system management and administration easier for end users.

For these reasons i chose Linux Mint and believe it to be the best Linux yet. There is no need to adjust the graphics settings, as Mint features lovely GUI effects and themes. This is a real OS X alternative!

iPod Touch Review

After a whole week of using the iPod Touch, i thought it was about time to make a review of it on the site:

I purchased the 8GB model of the iPod Touch which comes in one colour, black (unlike the iPhone which also comes in silver). After installing iTunes on my computer (Windows) i plugged in the iPod Touch and it was recognized by iTunes straight away but not by Windows Explorer, which didn’t list it in My Computer.

After a day of trying to get iTunes to work properly, i finally managed to get my setup complete and was able to use the iPod Touch. The first thing i did on it was to connect to my Wifi router and go on Youtube. I soon found out that this uses up the battery VERY quickly. Despite this, casual web browsing will not affect the battery life too much.

I really liked the Youtube app, which makes up for the lack of a Flash Player on the iPod Touch. The mail app is also very useful and i found the iPhone OS very easy to use and very touch responsive (compared to my Dell Axim X5). I especially liked using the pinching gestures on Safari to zoom in and out of the pages, and being able to move up and down web pages by simply flicking my finger up and down the page.

Overall, i would very much recommend this as a primary portable device. It is also good for business as the mail app allows you to connect to a Microsoft Exchange Server to get your mail. Unfortunately, the Exchange sync is not available for contacts and calendar so if you are a business user then i would recommend something like a Pocket PC or a palm device over the iPod Touch. The iPod Touch is a fantastic media player.

Whilst on youtube i found another way to emulate a Mac – this time through a youtube video!

You will need to watch this video in high quality full-screen mode, but it will make your PC look and sound like OS X Leopard instantly!
